The words Happy and Hour were used together for the first time in the late 19th century in primarily in  the domains of literature and acting, after which the term became increasingly popular primarily as the name of social gathering clubs. It should be noted that in 1914, the period of the Mexican Revolution, when the crew of U.S. ship U.S.S. Arkansas recorded use of the term.

Specifically, the Lieutenant of the ship approved leisure time of  few hours a week, divided into three days, to be used as entertainment of sorts, that would maintain crew’s morale and that would positively affect their wellbeing. In addition to short films, the sailors of the ship could enjoy boxing matches, wrestling, singing and reciting during this period.
